Last week in Stage 2 we spent time getting to know more about Australian author Chris McKimmie. Some of you may remember is book titled Two Peas in a Pod, back in Year 1 or 2 when it made it on the short list. Chris is a pretty funny guy, and likes to write stories about ordinary life. Watch the video on Chris, and click on the link to read a funny interview that appeared on the 'Kids Book Review' website.

The author that brought you the YOU CHOOSE series, talks about his upcoming books and more! We wrapped up Term 2 with some very interesting author studies. Stage 3 discovered the mystery of Lemony Snickets, creating some fantastic posters (see below), and why some authors use a pseudonym (pen name). Stage 2 explored the quirky style of Shaun Tan of The Lost Thing. Also known for his 2014 Picture Book of the Year win- Rules of Summer. Stage 1 were all laughs with stories of the naughty Penguin and adorable Piggie and Elephant by Mo Willems. Kindergarten fell in love with Ian Falconer's 'Olivia'. Known for his many picture books of the adventurous young pig, and entertaining television series. We also learnt how to draw Olivia with her famous red and white outfits (see below).
A lot of activity in the Library so far for Term 3! Recently Stage 2 and 3 began looking at this years selection for 2015 Picture Book of the Year. We began with Glenda Millard's The Duck and the Darklings. Before reading the book we focused on a section of the text and had to work out the sequence, then interpret the authors meaning. Not an easy task when you haven't even read the story yet. Nick BlandNick Bland was born in the Yarra Valley of Australia, in 1973. He was the son of an artist and a primary school teacher, and spent his early years on the farm where his parents lived. At age six, he moved with his family to 'the bush'. He wanted to be a cartoonist and a writer from a very young age. In 1996, he took a job at a book store, and decided to write and illustrate children's books. His first book, "A Monster Wrote Me a Letter" was published in Australia in 2005. He currently lives in Darwin, Australia and works full time as an author illustrator.
David WalliamsYou may recognise him from Britains Got Talent, but did you know he is also currently in the top 10 best selling authors for 2015! David Walliams has taken the children’s literary world by storm. He is the biggest UK children’s author to debut this century – his books have been translated into forty languages and have sold over four million copies in the UK alone. Mr Stink and Gangsta Granny have both been successfully adapted for TV – with The Boy in the Dress and Billionaire Boy arriving on screens at Christmas 2014 and 2015 respectively. David’s debut picture book, The Slightly Annoying Elephant, also went straight to number one in the Picture Book chart and was the bestselling hardback picture book of 2013. Both Ratburger and Demon Dentist won the National Book Awards Children’s Book of the Year. It comes as no surprise that countless reviewers have compared him to his all-time hero, Roald Dahl.

This year I had the honour of accompanying our student leaders to the annual National Young Leaders Day. It was an inspiring experience, as we got to listen to speakers Mike Baird (MP), Bindi Irwin, Rachael Leahcar, and the guys that inspired the story 'Paper Planes' Dylan Parker and James Norton. |
